U12 Div 3 (2) vs Grange Thistle (2)

It was an overcast morning when Samford and Grange took the field.  Some early morning rain had left the field heavy and slightly wet.  Samford was on the attack immediately and kept the ball in the opposition half for the first 10 minutes of the game, but they couldn't find a gap through the Grange defense. The Grange finally managed to get the ball out of their half and worked the ball up to the Samford goal. The Samford defenders blocked their every move. Some tough defense first led to a free kick to the Grange and finally to a penalty kick. Lucius bravely faced the penalty challenge, but couldn't stop a low, hard kick to the right corner. Score 1 to the Grange, late in the first half. Neither team had any real opportunities for the rest of the half and went into half time 0-1.
Samford came out strong after the break and went straight back onto attack. Some great passing moved the ball up the field, culminating in a goal scored by Noah after only a few minutes of the second half. Score now 1-1. Yuji was wringing the changes and making sure the Samford players stayed fresh. Only a few minutes later Callam went down with an injury - a boot to the left knee. He hopped off the field on Yuji's arm and had to watch the rest of the game from the sideline. The Grange then went on the attack and pinned the Samford close to the heir goal area. The team defended ferociously, but the ball finally got through and the Grange scored. 1-2. Samford was not giving up, though, and went straight back on the attack. They kept the ball in the Grange half and launched attack after attack. Nico even got a yellow card for aggressively competing in the air for a high ball. This sustained pressure ended in a goal: Finn took a big shot at goal, the goalie just managing to get a hand to the ball. It popped back out and Nico pushed it past the goalie into the left corner. 2-2 with only 2 minutes to go. The Grange started the game again, Samford quickly regained possession and went back on attack, but ran out of time.
Full time score 2-2. Well done team. A tough game, well contested.

U13 Div 3 (7) vs Virginia SC (2)

On Saturday, Samford Rangers U13’s played Virginia SC, Rangers made a great start with Ben Newham, Tom Straude and James Atkins putting through Brendan Foster making the score 1-0. Shortly after taking the lead Rangers were unable to clear the ball, allowing the home side to draw level. Although Rangers continued to play well they could not find a way to get past their opponent’s defence. The U13’s determination eventually paid off, taking them to a well-deserved 3-1 lead going into the break, with 2 very well taken goals from James Atkins.

In the second half, theU13’s continued their dominance and quickly went 6-1 up with goals from Jack Edwards, Brendan Foster and a peach of a goal from about 25 yards by Daniel Heitala. The boys were on fire,  but a decision against them, resulted in a goal for the home side. Rangers replied from the kick off, with a good move through the middle involving Tom Pokarier, Brandon McGrow and Tom Straude, ending in another goal Jack Edwards. Overall, a great performance by the whole team, with the final score Rangers U13s winning 7-2.
