U9 Roar vs Samford U9 Phoenix

Hey folks - wow! I'm just getting my voice back after a very exciting match.  A really good defensive display from the whole team today against a very good opposition.  Like all games we have played against Phoenix, this was a close fought game, with moments of really fantastic play from both teams.  I'm not supposed to give scores, but all I can say to all of you, is great game!

In the first half, Harry was solid in goal with great support and cover from the whole team; Riley in the second controlled the area well and was really unlucky with a couple of unstoppable shots. Out in the field, Harry was always dangerous up front with a couple of great bursts through the defence, whilst Riley supported strongly in midfield - a couple of nice turns and dribbles, in particular.

Marcus covered the whole pitch - at least twice - and was unlucky not to score with one break, but also supported defensively really well.  Charlie was another packet of energy, appearing everywhere on the field whilst making a couple of important clearances - and what I was really impressed about - took to defence really well, maintaining a great position.

Charlotte was as solid as always, with some great running the length of the pitch to help out defensively, incredibly reliable tacking and clearing of the ball - and even a clearance off the line in the second half.  George was also strong in midfield, with solid tackles, a couple of important interceptions and passes to get attacks going, and a critical take and run from inside our box that stopped a potential goal.

James is a great proponent of the block tackle, stopping the opponent every time, and he made several really intelligent clearances - either pushing the ball wide to one of our players or lofting the ball over the packed midfield to turn the defence.  Just like every week I can remember, Blain - if he had a nickname, it would be 'the Iceman' - coolly steps in to clear any danger breaking through our defensive ranks - and made it look so easy in the process.

As for Rhiana, all I asked her to do was not let anyone past and make strong tackles - she did that with bells on - no matter how big and burly the boys were running at her, and then consistently passed the ball through a congested midfield to start an attack.  Fantastic - player of the week!

That's all from me in a from time to time match report - I will try to do another couple!  Have a great weekend everyone - and I'll see you on Wednesday for training.  Oh, and bring on the next game... against Pine Hills U9 United - another good team; but no fear!

Cheers
Coach Roger
